Passive sampler for monitoring atmospheric pollutants (VERAM)

What we offer:
Researchers from University of Valencia have developed a fast, easy and versatile monitoring protocol for organic contaminants in air, based on the development of a new passive sampler (VERAM). This device consists of a lay-flat low-density polyehytelene membrane filled with solid phases. Retained pollutants are directly determined by gas chromatography (GC) using head space injection (HS) after heating the sampling device. The great advantages include the absence of sample handling, the reduction of analysis time and the avoidance of the use of solvents. A mixture of different solid phases allows sample all the possible pollutants in the air or it is possible to select appropriated solid phases for a specific sampling of compounds as a function of their physical-chemical properties.

Analysis and design of cosmetic products

What we offer:
GICAPC (Research group for analytical control of cosmetic products) is a research group of the University of Valencia, being its activity focused on:
-design, optimization and validation of analytical methods for cosmetic components in all kinds of commodities or cosmetic products (sunscreen formulations, shampoos, lipsticks, perfums, etc)
-design, optimization, validation and application of analytical methods for other cosmetic studies (i.e, design of new formulations, cosmetic controls, etc.) using green analytical strategies

Quality studies in fruit juices and other food liquids after different preservation treatments (pasteurization, pulsed electric fields, etc.) and storage conditions

What we offer:
Nutrialiment is a research group of the University of Valencia, being its research activity focused on:
-analysis of physicochemical properties of foods
-minerals determination in waters and foods
-colour analysis in liquid and solid foods
-antioxidant capacity determination in foods
-study of the nutritional quality of food after different preservation and storage treatments

Control system for the biological nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment plants based on low-cost sensors

What we offer:
Researchers from University of Valencia and Polytechnic University of Valencia have developed a control system for continuous WWTPs with biological nitrogen removal using low-cost sensors such as pH and ORP sensors. pH and ORP measurements give valuable information for applying fuzzy logic-based controllers. This control system let optimize the activated sludge process since maintains effluent nitrogen concentration under limit values with lower energy consumption. Moreover, with the obtained results, aeration and pumping energy consumption are optimized. This control system is programmed in a dedicated control application and can be installed to the control PC of the WWTP where it is connected to the SCADA of the plant by using standard OPC communication protocol.

Metal complexes with antioxidant activity

What we offer:
Researchers from University of Valencia have synthesized new SOD mimetic metal complexes which could be used as active ingredients in pharmaceutical compositions or food additives. These complexes present a high superoxide dismutase-like activity with low values of IC50, what supposes that the required quantity of complex to cause the mimetic/antioxidant effect is smaller that for other described synthetic compounds, and therefore possible side effects will be reduced. Moreover, these new complexes show high stability and low toxicity, what makes them good candidates for the treatment of diseases based on alterations or lacks of the SOD activity.

What are we looking for:
Licence Agreement or R+D agreements with pharmaceutical firms and/or drug development companies for carrying out preclinical and clinical development phases, needed for the development and final exploitation of the compounds.

Use of novel silica-coated silver nanoparticles as cytotoxic agents

What we offer:
Researchers from University of Valencia have developed a new type of silver nanoparticles coated with a silica nano-shell, able to exert selective killing of bacteria by irradiating at their surface plasmon frequency. The nanoparticles bind readily to the surface of bacteria without affecting their growing, since the toxic silver core is covered by the inert silica shell. Upon exposure to light corresponding to the absorption band of the silver nanocore, bacterial death is triggered effectively and selectively, most likely due to the enhanced electromagnetic fields in the nanoparticle proximity. The main application of the technology is in biomedicine, in phototherapy methods for the treatment of infectious illnesses through the inducement of cell death.

Micro-chamber device for cellular culture monitoring by nuclear magnetic resonance

What we offer:
The object of this invention is a compact (encapsulated) micro-chamber for longitudinal long-term studies of cellular systems by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It can be placed in commercially available NMR equipment. It is made with biocompatible and transparent materials, which allows complementary microscopy monitoring, using equipment for other microscopic techniques. It has been designed as a device for an easy use, not requiring laborious manipulation. Image analysis and metabolic studies of different cellular systemscan be carried out, using the appropriate conditions for each type of cell. Different channels are built and used for the independent insertion of cells, culture medium, and several sensors to control physical-chemical properties.

New method for the production of metallic oxides with spinel structure

What we offer:
Researchers of the Institute of Molecular Science of the University of Valencia have developed a new procedure for the synthesis of spinels from water soluble precursors. This procedure is faster, with lower energy consumption and generates purer spinels than known methods for spinel production. The main applications of the technology are:
-in ceramic industry, for the development of new pigments as ceramic water-soluble inks, because of the colour, purity and high temperature stability of the produced spinels
-in electronic industry, for the development of electronic components (i.e. high density memories) by applying water-soluble inks in nanolithography

Charge injection layer for electro-optical devices (OLEDs)

What we offer:
Researchers of the Institute of Molecular Science of the University of Valencia have developed a new charge injection layer for electro-optical devices, from metallic conductors to semiconductor or insulating materials based on organic or inorganic molecules and macromolecules with electrical or optical properties. With the proposed OLED is possible more light generation per current unit, as well as generating light at lower voltages, which results in a more energy-efficient devices.
The main applications of the technology are in lighting technology( large panels or wallpaper of light for signage or decoration, folded panels or even in clothing) and in electronic display applications (mobile phones, mp3 players ,TV, etc)

Use of the PEDF factor to induce stem cells self renewal

What we offer:
Researchers at the University of Valencia and the University of Castilla La Mancha have developed a new method to induce stem cells self-renewal, through the use of the Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor (PEDF). PEDF keeps stem cells plastic properties and their undifferentiated state through a moderated proliferation process, which attends to natural signals of growth. Thus, an excessive expansion is avoided, restricting the appearance of undesired effects, such as tumours, and/or the culture’s exhaustion. As a result, an increase of the cell culture’s efficiency and therapeutic potential is reported, achieving a higher yield in the production of stem cells from an initial amount. The capacity of self-renewal induction has been tested in vitro and in vivo, in mice neural cells. The main applications of the technology are in cell biology and regenerative medicine.

Method for producing nanocorundum

What we offer:
Researchers fromUniversity of Valencia have developed a novel method for producing corundum of low crystallinity (nanocorundum) using natural or synthetic commodities in solid state, without pretreatment. The method of the invention produces nanocorundum, avoiding the formation of alumina transition polymorphs of low temperature. As a result, the final product is porous and their disintegration is easy, avoiding the hardness and difficult grinding of the compact corundum. The main application of the technology is in the chemical industry, for producing corundum for diverse uses (refractories, abrasives, functional fillers for polymers, production of ceramics, glasses and glazed ceramics with reactive alumina, etc) and nanocorundum for special applications (catalyst carriers, implants, aerospace applications, etc.).

Magnetic in-tube solid phase microextraction (MAGNETIC-IT-SPME)

What we offer:
Researchers from University of Valencia have developed a new procedure and device for in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME) which shows better extraction efficiency than current systems by using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in the adsorbent phase in the capillary and applying an external magnetic field.
The new device MAGNETIC-IT-SPME, connected to a capillary liquid chromatography dispositive, will be valuable for the execution of fully automated chemical analysis if high sensibility is required.

Immunoassays for the determination of fungicide residues

What we offer:
Researchers from University of Valencia and CSIC have synthesized haptens to generate antibodies for the immunochemical determination of fungicides such as boscalid and cyprodinil. These antibodies can be included in an immunoassay kit for a sensible and fast detection of fungicide residues. Immunoassays offer the possibility of rapid determination, both qualitatively and quantitatively, of trace levels of pesticides in food and environmental matrices. Moreover, researchers are able to obtain effective antibodies against other compounds, not only against boscalid and cyprodinil.
